Hazel Leaves

Hazel is a native shrub, commonly found both in hedgerows and as an under-storey layer in native woodland. Trees are grown from hazelnuts, which are increasingly difficult to obtain from local woodland (local provenance) because of the growth in grey squirrel populations. Squirrels can eat the nuts in their green, unripe state; hazelnuts can't be picked as viable as seeds until they begin to ripen to brown.
