Downy Birch Leaves
© 2006 Glasu

Most people are familiar with the "Silver Birch" tree, a native tree with it's distinctive pale, silvery bark. These thrive on recently cleared ground, particularly well drained heathland. The downy, or hairy, birch is also a native birch, found even more commonly in the wetter environments of upland Wales.
There are also a great many native, hybrids due to cross-pollination between the two pure types. Accurate identification of parent trees is therefore important to enable their seed and trees grown from this to be correctly labelled.
